I know a lot of hotel staff live in Higuey and it is served by the local bus I think. Is there anything there for the tourist to see and do? Would it be a worthwhile diversion for a day trip? Any safety concerns if travelling during the day I know the female hotel staff take taxi from bus drop off to their home at night. Friends we met in the condo we stayed at in PC did a day trip to Higuey. They caught the local bus to Friusa, change at Friusa for the Higuey bus.
There is the Basilica if you like looking at churches and an open air market - which they said was mostly foodstuffs where the locals shop. PC Mike's "Higuey Circle" tour took us to the town. We went to the cathedral and the market.
I think there is also a museum near the cathedral but we did not go there. I'd like to attend mass on Sunday. It would also be nice to go to the market if it is open on Sunday. Taking the bus would be an adventure. Is it okay to take the local bus if you do not speak fluent Spanish?
We will be in Bahia Principe in November. It would be nice experience the local life by taking the bus. I am not an expert on Higuey but if like other markets I suspect it will be fairly quiet on a Sunday.
Don't know the church service times - it may be worth posting the question on the forums of DR1. Higuey will give you a good idea of local Dominican life. It is easy and safe enough to do on your own. Punta Cana. Profile JOIN. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. A day in Higuey. Watch this Topic.
